Change the way people see, experience and talk about your school
This powerful half-day workshop will assist school leaders to introduce empowering changes to their school culture.
School culture shapes:
  • work enjoyment for teachers and staff,
  • empowering relationships for parents and
  • positive engagement for students
Change the way people see, experience and talk about your school
Your school community invests and learns about your school culture through their shared behaviour with others.  School culture is learned through experiencing positive examples from colleagues.  Importantly school culture is learned through interaction with others within the school community.  The people who participate in your school environment shape your school culture.  A cultural change requires people to change their behaviours.

How School Culture Shapes the Organization
School culture creates a psychosocial environment that profoundly impacts teachers, administrators, and students. A school’s culture shapes its organization. By strengthening shared meaning among employees, culture serves a variety of functions inside the school:
  • Identity—culture’s clearly defined and shared perceptions and val- ues give organization members a sense of who they are and their distinctiveness as a group.
  • Commitment—culture facilitates the growth of commitment to something larger than individual self-interest.
  • Behavior standards—culture guides employees’ words and actions, providing a behavioral consistency by specifying appropriate norms and unwritten rules for what employees should say and do in given situations.
  • Social control—shared cultural values, beliefs, and practices direct behavior through informal rules (institutionalized norms) that members generally follow, enhance the social system’s stability, and reinforce and shape the culture in a self-repeating cycle.

The Workshop

Practical Strategies for Boys in Your Classroom is a workshop for teachers in being mindful of the learning and behaviour needs/patterns exhibited by boys.
Session One – Boy-friendly classroom practices
We will start the workshop with a host of practical strategies that help a boy feel comfortable and more likely to engage with their learning.  These simple strategies will provide teachers with a toolbox to draw upon when the boys in their classrooms are restless or not engaged.
Session Two – Boys and behaviour
This session will outline ways to work with a boy’s high energy and testosterone levels to create an environment where their behaviour is measured and less likely to interfere with a calm learning environment.
Session Three – Boys and reading and writing
This literacy session will demonstrate the strategies that boys prefer when undertaking writing tasks and when engaged with reading for pleasure and reading for meaning.
Session Four - Be an outstanding teacher of boys
This session will look at practical ways to help a teacher relate and empower the boys they teach.  It will take into consideration the ways in which boys build relationships with adults, as well as the communication techniques that help a boy engage with teachers.
