Lisa's story

Picture
I have been teaching at high school for 5 years.  This year I have been given a class of year 9 boys whom I find particularly challenging.  There is Luke who is not able to sit still or keep quiet.  Nat can't stay focussed for more than a minute and another two boys, James and Tim who are rude and agressive.  My principal asked if I would like to attend the Women Teaching Boys workshop in our region.  I jumped at the chance to learn more about understanding and teaching boys more effectively.

The workshop, attended by 15 teachers with issues similar to mine was engaging, informative and inspiring.  Michael's knowledge coupled with his interactive teaching style had us all sharing ideas and investing in the strategies that he shared.  We tried three or four easy-to-implement ideas during the workshop.  The Walk and Talk exercise was difficult for me but helped me understand how to communicate more effectively with boys (and my husband).

At the end of our two hours I had dozens of ideas to draw upon in the future.  I received a CD with the workshop contents plus a library of support resources which I can now share with my teaching colleagues.

My principal has asked if I think bringing Michael to run the Women Teaching Boys workshop at our school would be a good idea.  I emphatically agreed and we are now setting up a date in the near future to bring Michael to run a Teaching Boys Intensive for all staff, not just the women.

HI Michael
Your CD sounds like the sort of help we need for our boys.!! I would love to have you share some helpful insights into ways of dealing with our high risk students. We have some great teachers but some very challenging and tramatised students. We would appreciate your ideas to help them be successful at school.
Thank you for your help
Cheers Bethanie
