Dear teacher,
Shortly you will be participating in one of my Engaging Boys workshops. I have set out below a little about what to expect during the workshop. In addition there are a few things you can do to prepare for the time we will share together. The more of these activities you undertake the more you will get out of the Engaging Boys workshop.
My backgrond.
I am the youngest of three brothers. My early development and education saw me struggle within the robust masculine world of an all boys school. I survived OK and went on to become a high school teacher. My teaching career started in an inner city co-ed high school. I have taught on a remote island school, in a prestigious girls only school as well as co-ed and single-gender colleges. .Most recently l was teaching at a boys only college with 2,000 students. I have always been most comfortable while teaching all boys classes. I am an experienced teacher and workshop presenter. In recent years over 15,000 Australian teachers have attended my boys development workshops throughout Australia. My training style is engaging, relevant, fun, interactive and motivating. During most workshops I include interactive games and activities. Participants are often working in small teams or in pairs and moving about the training space. |
Our workshop program will include:
Looking at the boys we teach - by looking at individual boys we avoid the trap of thinking all boys are the same.
Engaging boys with their learning - in this session I will outline some strategies and thinking about engagement that often work well for boys.
Boys' behaviour in the classroom - We will discuss aspects of behaviour and ways to modify behaviours that interfere with learning and social interaction.
Building positive relationships with boys - You already have a wealth of relationship building skills. We will look at how to apply these to the boys you teach.
Men and women teaching boys - Both genders have strong benefits to offer the boys they teach.
Strategies that make a difference - in the final session we will focus on some of the little things we can do daily in our classrooms to keep boys engaged in their learning.
