Practical Strategies for Boys in Your Classroom
Practical Strategies for Boys in Your Classroom is a workshop for teachers in being mindful of the learning and behaviour needs/patterns exhibited by boys.
Session One – Boy-friendly classroom practices
We will start the workshop with a host of practical strategies that help a boy feel comfortable and more likely to engage with their learning. These simple strategies will provide teachers with a toolbox to draw upon when the boys in their classrooms are restless or not engaged.
Session Two – Boys and behaviour
This session will outline ways to work with a boy’s high energy and testosterone levels to create an environment where their behaviour is measured and less likely to interfere with a calm learning environment.
Session Three – Boys and reading and writing
This literacy session will demonstrate the strategies that boys prefer when undertaking writing tasks and when engaged with reading for pleasure and reading for meaning.
Session Four - Be an outstanding teacher of boys
This session will look at practical ways to help a teacher relate and empower the boys they teach. It will take into consideration the ways in which boys build relationships with adults, as well as the communication techniques that help a boy engage with teachers.
Duration – Each session can be tailored to a teaching team’s needs. Minimum 30 minutes – maximum 60 mins. Schools can select to spend more time on one session and less on another to fit their time available.
Support resources – Each session is accompanied by a CD of reference resources that teachers can draw upon to remind themselves on the session contents or to take their level of understanding to a higher level.
Your workshop presenter – Michael Auden is an experienced teacher of boys. He has taught on a campus with 2,000 boys enrolled. Over recent years approx. 9,000 Australian teachers and parents have attended his Teaching Boys workshops throughout Australia. His boys learning resources are popular with schools across the English-speaking world.
Workshop fee – a two-hour workshop costs $1200. Anything longer is open to negotiation.
