Boys Education Workshops at CAE with Michael Auden
253 Flinders Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000

Raising boys' achievement workshops.

With boys continuing to fall behind girls in qualifications and skills, these comprehensive half-day workshops are essential dates for all teachers interested in raising boys' achievement at school. These workshops will enable you to identify the barriers that impede boys' learning, work on practical solutions to implement change and set future goals to raise attainment generally. The workshops will consist of sessions showcasing teacher expertise, practical ideas and advice, as well as a CD of resources to share with your collegial team at school.
Your workshop presenter – Michael Auden is an experienced teacher of boys.  He has taught on a campus with 2,000 boys enrolled.  Today Michael is a well respected authority on boys development and education.  Thousands of teachers attend his workshops and tens of thousands of teachers use his strategies, ideas and tactics through his self-paced learning modules. Many schools use Michael to conduct gender-based workshops for both boys and girls.  He is one of a handful of experienced teachers available to conduct practical workshops on gender-based education in Australia.  His boys learning resources are popular with schools across the English-speaking world. Michael is the author of:
  • How to Teach Boys who are Angry, Disruptive, Reluctant or just plain Lazy
  • The Dangerous Life of Boys
  • Women Teaching Boys

  • The Emotional Life of Boys

  • My Teaching Voice

August 12 - Breaking through Barriers to Boys' Achievement at School
10am till 12 noon Fee $145 includes a CD of support resources
Educators have for many years sought to understand why boys underperform in schools and what can be done about it. In Breaking through barriers to boys' achievement, Michael Auden provides a picture as to why boys of all ages underachieve and what can be done to start solving the problem. He presents the barriers to boys' learning, including early language development, 'youth' culture and lack of male role models. His emphasis is very much on turning out respectable young men who have a 'caring masculinity'.
You will find tried-and-tested strategies which will help you to:
- effectively engage boys in the life of the school
- engage boys in the curriculum, with particular emphasis on literacy
- create the right culture for learning
- develop emotional intelligence in boys
- develop self-esteem
- provide opportunities for reflection
- turn 'peer pressure' into a positive force for good
- teach in ways that will hit all the right buttons for boys, but will not disadvantage girls

Breaking through barriers to boys' achievement provides a practical workshop that will enable every teacher, department, or school to determine precisely which barriers impinge upon their work with boys and to plan a way forward.
